Anatomical Visualization Project
How might we visualize what’s below the surface, from new angles?
As part of my Medical Visualization curriculum at the University of Toronto Biomedical Communications Program, I created the following diagram that aims to educate anatomy students on the structures and tissue layers of the face, from a non-traditional (oblique) view – one that isn’t typically found in a traditional atlas or medical textbook.
I engaged in a variety of visual problem-solving techniques to produce a lifelike, accurate image:
- Building detailed maquettes and 3D models, forming a strong structural basis for my sketch
- Pressure-testing sketches against gold-standard anatomy references, including consultations with certified anatomists at University of Toronto
- Cross-referencing surgical videos and imagery studies to render live tissues
